The Importance of Fitness Testing

Establishing your baseline fitness measurements is a vital part to your weight-loss and fitness success. No house can be built without a proper foundation. Any program offered by Resolutions will require the individual to participate in fitness levels testing at the beginning of and during their programs.

Individual Fitness Tests

Body-fat percentage – Over-all muscle-to-fat ratio

If you possess high body-fat levels, you run the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and strokes. Lowering your fat-to-muscle ratio is probably one of the most important aspects to achieving any fitness goal. The types of body-fat tests range from immersing you in a bath tube to measure the water displacement to using a body-fat caliper to measure your skin thickness. While these tests may not sound fun, avoiding them could be life-threatening.

Healthy Standards for Body-fat Ratios:

Age Percentage
Men
20 - 30 8-19%
40 - 50 11-22%
60 - 70 13-25%

Women
20 - 30 21-33%
40 - 50 23-35%
60 - 70 24-36%

Flexibility – The range of motion in all major joints.

Increasing your flexibility will decrease your chances or broken bones, pulled muscles and even surgery, especially later in life. Stretch or be stretched! Flexibility testing is a matter of seeing if you can touch your toes.

Healthy Flexibility Standard:

The goal is less than two inches between finger tips and toes.

Strength – The over-all power, endurance and strength of your muscles.

Later in life, the strength of your body is repeatedly tested and it must keep up with aging. Pushing the limits of your muscles is another vital part in beating the aging process. We determine how much weight you can bench-press one time or how many pushups you can do in one interval to establish your baseline strength.

Endurance – The over-all strength of the heart and lungs.

Our lungs, heart and the endurance of our muscles need to be constantly pushed. A good way to test your endurance is to see how fast you can run or walk a mile. It can be a little uncomfortable, but it's a great test of your current fitness levels.

Healthy Fitness Standard:

The goal is something under a 15-minute mile for sure!

Girth measurements – body part measurements

Measuring your body parts in the beginning of a program can be an eye-opening experience, but down the road, when motivation can be low, measuring the progress in your body girth can get your spirits back up again. This one is easy -  you just use a measuring tape and count the inches.

Healthy Standard:

The goal isn't to get depressed, but to be motivated.

Success = less inches!

All tests will be in conducted and measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines.
