Chapter 11
Support, Encouragement & Responsibility
You can have the best people around you, but some of them, regardless how well- intentioned, do more harm than good when you’re striving to reach your fitness goals. In my opinion, consistent, effective exercising and eating smart comes down to those around you, how life encourages you, and what responsibilities are dealt to you.
Garbage in, garbage out! When developing an “A” team around you, you must constantly think, “Garbage in— Garbage out.” You must have supportive people who support you in your aspirations and goals.
A good “A” team is one that offers support and honest encouragement while requiring personal responsibility.
Your Inner Circle
It has been said that you can tell a lot about a person by the company he keeps. This is a very true statement. A good self-examination is to consciously listen to how you and your friends talk to each other. In most cases, you will be shocked at what comes out of your mouth and those around you. And you question why you get what you get out of life?
Let me say this first. Many decisions in life have strings attached to them. Strings sometimes make it virtually impossible to accomplish any goal. However, it is important to be aware of who influences you the most. Usually there are two types of people around you:
- Toxic, negative, pessimistic people
- Non-toxic, encouraging, supportive people.
Negative, Pessamistic People = Toxic
You usually know these people. After being around them, you feel physically and mentally drained. Toxic people are envious, cynical, and pessimistic by nature. If you try to get support and encouragement from this type of person, all you’re going to get is frustrated. If possible, don’t spend much time with them.
Positive, Optimistic People = Non-toxic
On the other hand, if you are around those who are honest and encouraging, you become a reservoir of energy. Depending on how important change is to you, changing friends and certain relationships may be necessary. In other words, if you want to know about yourself, just look at the types of friends you have.
The most effective accountability systems I know are those that stress encouragement, accompanied by direct responsibility. Encouragement and support can come from a variety of directions, but both are essential to your success. Choose people for your inner support circle that you respect, who respect you, and who are strong enough to offer you encouragement - and an expectation of responsibility and accountability from you.
